The city is compact enough for a simple plan. Begin near the river, spend a few hours downtown or around the university, then choose one nearby hill or country road. There is little reward in rushing between all of them.
Follow the water
Shared paths along the Willamette connect parks and neighborhoods. They offer an immediate sense of Eugene's scale and an easy option when weather or energy rules out a longer hike.
Markets and city streets
Downtown and adjacent districts are best explored on foot. Markets and events vary by day and season, so treat a specific schedule as a bonus rather than the foundation of the visit.
A higher view
Low hills rise close to town and provide quick changes of perspective. Paths can be slick after rain and exposed in summer heat; turn around when conditions stop being pleasant.
Beyond Eugene
Country roads lead toward covered bridges, vineyards, foothills and the Coast Range. Choose one direction. The coast and Cascades each deserve their own full day, with road conditions checked before departure.
